Electronic payments record in 2025 - BoA: Albanians are using more online

Payment of electricity, water, telephone bills, police fines, credit card payments, taxes, and other purchases are increasingly being made online or physically by card.

The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows that in the first half of the year, around 5 million home banking transactions were carried out, or 22.6% more than in the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, regarding payments made by card at POS terminals, they have increased by 42% compared to January-June 2024. Specifically, in the first half of 2025, 12.5 million card payments were made at POS terminals.

Also, the AECH and AIPS payment systems have undergone another development in recent years. According to statistics, the number of transactions carried out with AECH reached over 1 million in January-September of this year.

On the other hand, the amount of payments in euros made through the AIPS system hit a new record in July. According to data from the Bank of Albania, the number of payments made within the country through the AIPS EURO system reached 218 thousand at the end of the first seven months.

If we make a comparison with the period January-July 2024, the number of payments made with AIPS EURO has increased by 21.8%, while their amount also results in an increase of 22.7%.

Since its launch in 2022, AIPS Euro has provided significant savings for Albanian citizens. Specifically, the operation of the AIPS Euro payment system saved businesses and citizens over 37 million euros in 2023. By the end of 2024, the savings were estimated at approximately 100 million euros.

The Bank of Albania has undertaken several efforts to modernize payment systems and promote electronic payments, ranging from reducing commissions to SEPA membership or implementing the fast payment system from next year.

Despite these figures showing an increasing trend of electronic payments from year to year, physical money continues to be widely used for making purchases or receiving services. The Albanian economy could save billions of euros by replacing physical cash payments with electronic payments.
