Rama: Albania first in the Western Balkans for environmental performance, reflection on nature protection remains necessary

In a public communication, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that Albania has been ranked first in the Western Balkans for environmental performance according to the Environmental Performance Index 2026 report, calling this an important assessment by international institutions.
Rama announced that Albania ranks 46th out of 177 countries in the world and has made the greatest progress in the region over the last ten years. According to him, the country also ranks 21st in the world for climate change mitigation.
The Prime Minister emphasized that these results are not assessments made by the government itself, but conclusions of academic and international institutions that measure environmental performance with the same methodology at the global level.
Rama also focused on Albania's transformation in relation to environmental protection, recalling that years ago the country faced massive deforestation, illegal hunting, and river pollution, while today, according to him, there is greater social awareness about nature issues.
He also praised the protests held for environmental protection, considering them a sign of a society that has become more sensitive to the preservation of biodiversity.
However, the Prime Minister underlined that the ranking in the report should not be seen as a reason for complacency.
"This report is not a medal to be proud of, but a very big responsibility and a reminder that we must listen more, correct more quickly when necessary, and defend with even greater determination the balance between development and nature," said Rama.
He admitted that the government has also made mistakes during the development process, emphasizing that no one who governs can claim to be always right.
In conclusion, Rama said that the construction of a European Albania requires that the economy, the environment, and facts go together, while warning that the promised reflection after the public debate on the protection of flamingos and the environment will be presented soon.
