The government is expected to reinstate the Fuel Transparency Board/ Excise duty

The government is considering reinstating the Transparency Board, which is expected to set price caps for fuel, following the significant increase in diesel prices that have reached 217 lek per liter. At the same time, the Council of Ministers plans to reduce the excise tax by 20%, a measure that aims to bring an immediate reduction in the final price of fuel.

At some gas stations in Tirana, oil was sold for up to 217 lek per liter, increasing by an average of about 15 lek in a short time. After this situation, the government is expected to reactivate the Transparency Board,

The mechanism that determines the maximum sales price limit for consumers is expected to be put back into operation in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the reduction in excise duty from 39.6 lek to 31.68 lek per liter is expected to have a direct effect on the market, bringing a reduction of about 8–10 lek per liter, when the impact of VAT is also taken into account.

To prevent abuses in the market, a profit margin has also been determined: 3 lek for wholesale trade and 12 lek for retail.

The Transparency Board will meet continuously and will be based on international exchanges for determining fuel prices. The measure aims to ease the fiscal burden and ensure faster reflection of market changes in prices for citizens, while it is warned that entities that do not respect the ceiling prices will face penalties. The Minister responsible for Infrastructure and Energy has announced these measures after the government meeting held on Thursday, in case the price increase continues.

Over the last two weeks, the price of oil and gasoline in Albania has increased by about 15 lekë, an increase related to tensions in the Middle East and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Initially, the government established a task force to monitor the hydrocarbon market in order to prevent abuses, while the Competition Authority has also launched an investigation into the situation.
