Loan payments dominate bank transfers in 2025/ Over 2.5 trillion lek circulated in the system, most of it being loans

Bank transfers related to loans and deposits have increased during 2025, indicating higher financial activity between banks and customers.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, credit transfers worth around 1.6 trillion lek were made last year. These are payments that go to banks and mainly include credit card repayments, loan installment payments, as well as the interest that clients pay on these loans.
At the same time, debit transfers, i.e. payments that banks make to customers, reached around 900 billion lek. This category mainly includes the disbursement of new loans, but also payments that banks make for deposits, such as the return of the amount saved or the interest that savers benefit from.
In total, during 2025, more than 2.5 trillion lek circulated in the banking system through these two types of transfers.
If we look at the structure, it turns out that about two-thirds of transfers are credits, i.e. payments that customers make to banks to settle their obligations. While about one-third are debits, which represent payments from banks to customers.
This shows that a significant part of the movement of money in the banking system is related to the credit relationship between banks and customers: on the one hand, banks provide loans and pay interest on deposits, while on the other hand, households and businesses repay loan installments and pay the corresponding interest.
Compared to 2024, transfers have increased in both directions. This is related to an increase in financial activity in the economy, where banks have continued to finance more individuals and businesses with loans, while customers have also made more payments to settle their obligations.
