105 million euro solar energy project in Fier - EBRD considers financial support for storage
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering financing up to €53 million for the construction of two photovoltaic plants and an energy storage system in Albania, in one of the largest private solar energy projects planned so far in the country.
According to the project description published by the EBRD, the financing will support the construction of the Blue Solar 2 and Blue Solar 3 plants, with a total capacity of 160 MW of solar energy, as well as a 60 MW battery energy storage system. The project is expected to be built in the Sheq Marinas area, in the Fier Municipality, where Blue Solar 1, with a capacity of 64 MW, is also in operation.
The total cost of the project is estimated at around 105 million euros, while the loan is currently under review and the EBRD board approval is expected in July 2026.
According to the bank, the project aims to increase renewable energy capacities in Albania and diversify domestic energy production, reducing dependence on hydropower plants and exposure to droughts or hydro fluctuations.
Another element of the project is the battery storage system, which aims to increase the flexibility and stability of the energy system, allowing greater integration of solar energy into the grid.
The EBRD estimates that the project will also contribute to increasing the participation of the private sector in the Albanian energy market, through liberalized market models and investments oriented towards clean energy.
