For every two weddings, one divorce! - 6632 requests filed at the courts for separation
For every two couples who got married last year, another ended up in court to end their marriage. Data from the Ministry of Interior shows that during 2024, around 12,100 marriages were registered throughout Albania.
Compared to a year ago, the number of marriages has decreased by 13%, continuing the downward trend of recent years.
On the other hand, 6,632 divorce petitions were filed in the country's courts. This means that the ratio between divorces and marriages is approximately 1 to 2, a situation that reflects an increasing trend of legal separations.
The data also shows that this trend may continue to worsen, as the number of divorce applications has been increasing in the last three years. Meanwhile, the number of marriages is following a negative trend, with fewer and fewer couples deciding to take this step.
A decline in the number of marriages and an increase in divorces could have direct economic impacts. Fewer marriages mean fewer births, which exacerbates the aging population and reduces the workforce in the future.
In addition, separations are often associated with financial problems for families and increased demand for social support. Also, various sectors of the economy, such as the real estate market, event organization and family consumption, may be affected by this trend.
