Pound cash caught at the border, "challenges" other currencies - Over 77 thousand GBP undeclared at 8 customs points until August
The Directorate of Anti-Traffic at the border crossing points in Durrës, Rinas, Hani Hotit, Vlorë, Kakavijë, Kapshticë, Muriqan and Morinë Customs Branches has carried out 3,648 controls and monitoring of passengers, vehicles, means of transport of goods and passengers until August 2024 . In this time interval, 9 cash seizures were made in total value of 53,600 EUR. 77,445 GBP and 12,300 CHF.
The highest undeclared value appears to be in the UK, followed by the European currency Euro.
The tourist season is the one that most affects the increase in visits from immigrants, which also means a higher flow of money brought from abroad.
But at the same time, this also brings many cases where there are attempts to not respect the obligation to declare the money that is available at the time of the trip. According to the law, any amount over 10,000 euros must be declared at the border point.
The official data of the Ministry of Finance show that during the period January-August 2024, 5,975 customs inspections were carried out, of which 2,327 controls were carried out by the Anti-Smuggling Directorate, where 946 or about 42% of them were complete.
During the checks carried out, 84 cases of customs violations were discovered, of which 65 cases involved penalties with a total value of 26 million ALL. The effectiveness of controls with violations for the period January-August 2024 results in 8%.
As far as "customs investigations carried out", the Directorate of Investigation has prepared and sent to the Prosecution Body: 12 referrals, 12 customs violations, administrative offenses, 72 smuggling violations, 84 information against customs branches for decision making. During the period January-August 2024, a total of 2,946 cases were handled and 1,171 cases were completed.
