Oil increases the price of fruits and vegetables - Expert Zefi: The government

Fruits and vegetables produced by Albanian farmers this season are expected to fetch higher prices on the market due to the increase in oil and input prices, as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. Economic experts predict an increase in production costs of up to 50%, which could put Albania at a disadvantage compared to countries in the region.

"Agricultural products will come out at a higher price because if production costs, production inputs will become more expensive, up to 50 percent, then agricultural products will come out more expensive. But this is a blow that is not only in Albania, it is an international blow, other countries competing with Albania, such as Macedonia, Kosovo or other countries, will also have the same impact, however we suffer more due to the higher price, due to higher fuel taxes and this will increase the competitive disadvantage between Albania and other countries that compete in the Albanian market for agricultural products."

But how can farmers be helped so that the price of oil can be amortized, production is not hampered, and they can enter the market at competitive prices?

"I am in favor of subsidies and cost reduction. But I am in favor of a more drastic measure, not only to have oil subsidies due to the crisis, but to have a complete reduction in fuel taxes, because it is farmers and mainly rural areas who are most disadvantaged by the increase in oil prices because they are the ones who work the land, the ones who transfer their goods from villages to populated centers, and they are the most negatively affected."

While the government is expected to soon approve the new measures of the National Agricultural Support Scheme for 2026, which also includes diesel support, it appears that due to the higher price, farmers will benefit from fewer liters of subsidies.
