Methodology for water supply subsidies approved/ For families in need, 100% compensation for up to 5 cubic meters of water per month
The government has adopted an important decision for the water supply and sewerage sector, which aims to financially support families in need and guarantee basic drinking water supply services. The new instruction sets out the methodology for the distribution and use of state subsidies for providers of these services for the 2025 budget year.
The focus of this decision is to ensure full compensation for basic water consumption for vulnerable categories. The subsidies will be distributed by the National Water Supply and Sewerage Agency and will cover 100% of the consumption value of up to 5 cubic meters of water per month for each family contract in need, according to the definitions of the law on social assistance.
The compensation also includes the fixed fee, as well as the fees for sewerage and wastewater treatment. The bill reduction will be applied automatically by the water supply and sewerage companies through the monthly billing system. This subsidy is granted only once per household, regardless of whether it contains more than one member belonging to the beneficiary categories.
To benefit from the fund, regional or local water utilities must have signed a performance contract with AKUK. Those that have not yet done so will not be reimbursed for the applied discounts, and will bear the costs from their own resources until the contract is signed.
In cases where an unused fund remains, it can be used to cover the costs of electricity by those companies that operate over 75% of water production by mechanical lifting, a factor that significantly weighs on their budgets.
The list of beneficiaries will be forwarded to the utility companies every month by local government units through electronic channels and the National Registry, while AKUK will closely supervise the implementation of the decision through its control structures.
This decision is part of the government's efforts to modernize the water supply and sewerage sector, within the framework of the agreement with the World Bank and in accordance with the objectives of the National Strategy for this sector, guaranteeing a more equitable and sustainable access to basic services for citizens.
