Removing trade tariffs with the US/ Mullaj: Time for joint action
At a time when international economic relations are being reshaped by new geopolitical and trade dynamics, Albania has a real opportunity to strengthen its position as a strategic partner of the United States of America. The significant increase in trade exchanges between the two countries and the convergence of political and economic positions make this a particularly favorable moment to take concrete steps towards deepening economic cooperation.
The Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce, Neritan Mullaj, emphasized that cooperation between the public and private sectors is fundamental to creating concrete bridges between Albania and the USA.
“Building a sustainable economic partnership cannot be achieved unilaterally. Cooperation between the public and private sectors is fundamental to creating concrete bridges between Albania and the United States. I firmly believe that the path towards a sustainable economic partnership between Albania and the United States is not a journey that can be traveled alone. This is a strategy that requires the involvement and commitment of many private, public, institutional and human actors. For me, public-private cooperation is the basis. I have seen that joint initiatives such as trade missions or sectoral forums are not just events, they are real bridges that strengthen ties and make our export capacities visible. In them, we not only present our products, but also show our vision of being a serious and reliable partner,” Mullaj said.
Mullaj emphasized that to have real influence on decision-making, we must speak the language of facts and data.
“As a business organization that relies heavily on advocacy, we know the value of facts and arguments to be successful and convincing. AmCham and government institutions must use clear statistical projections to prove that our trade relationship with the US is not a passing fad; it has a real impact on the Albanian economy, preserves jobs, and strengthens our most vital industries. These are valid arguments that can advance lobbying for tariff reductions. And this is where the strong voice of the private sector comes into play. Representatives of sectors such as the iron, steel, chrome, or even medicinal plants industries must take their role as spokespersons for their interests. They are on the front lines, they know the terrain, and lobbying that comes from direct experience is much more convincing,” he emphasized.
Also, the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce explained that, in addition to the engagement of economic sectors, diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role, together with the diaspora.
“An important and influential actor in this process is the Albanian diaspora in America. Albanians who live and work there are a powerful bridge of communication and influence. Many of them are successful entrepreneurs who can not only invest in Albania, but also promote our products and economic potential in the American market. They are the most vivid proof of our natural ties with the USA.
And last but not least, diplomacy. The Albanian government has a crucial role in this strategy. It must engage directly with its American counterparts, presenting Albania as a reliable and stable partner. Only through direct and sustained engagement can we build a trade relationship that benefits from preferential terms and brings long-term development,” Mullaj explained.
