Women work more part-time/ Younger age groups and retirees prefer it more
Working is an essential need for every citizen, as it provides the income we need to cover our expenses and living costs. The choice of work and its schedule varies from one person to another, depending on the opportunities and conditions that each person has. Many individuals, especially young people, choose to work part-time, combining this with studies or a second job to increase their income. Although it is usually thought that part-time work is more widespread among young people, it is also found in other age groups.
During 2024, data show that in the age group 15 to 24 years, 25.8% of the total employed worked part-time. This number is related to the fact that young people have more flexibility to have a second job, but also because pursuing studies does not allow them to be fully committed to work. The situation is different for the age group 25 to 54 years, where only 10% of the employed work part-time compared to the total number of employed. This age group is usually engaged in full-time work due to financial stability and family responsibilities.
At older ages, the percentage of those working part-time is higher. In the 55-64 age group, 18.4% of employees have chosen this form of employment, while for even older ages this figure reaches 43.9%, compared to the total number of employees. This is related to the fact that many of them, although they may be retired or self-employed, are looking for an easier and more flexible way to remain active in the labor market.
Another interesting difference is between the genders - part-time work is significantly more prevalent among women than men, which also indicates the division of roles and responsibilities that still exists in many families and societies.
