Smuggling goods at the border, 127 cases caught - Controls increased. Which are the "hottest" customs points?
Businesses and citizens who attempt to smuggle goods through customs points are targeted by the customs administration, and this is confirmed by the increasing number of cases that have been detected.
According to official data, during the period January - December 2024, the Anti-Smuggling Directorate, Land and Maritime Sector, carried out 3,414 controls, of which 1,291 or about 38% were complete.
During the controls carried out, in cooperation with the structures of the General Directorate of Customs, 127 cases of customs violations were discovered, where fines were imposed for 90 cases with a total value of 30.1 million lek. While the evaded duty was in the value of 8.4 million lek.
The Land Sector has carried out controls throughout the customs territory and road axes, where priority has been given to cargoes with risky goods, using information from the field, as well as that available, according to the type of goods, subject, tariff classification, origin, but also controls for illegal trafficking.
Compared to the same time period in 2023, it results that, in 2024, there are 29 more cases of findings/discoveries of violations, or 48% more, as well as an increase in the value of penalties by about 11.7 million lek more, or 63% more.
The highest number of cases of violations, ascertained during controls carried out by the Anti-Smuggling Directorate, in cooperation with other structures of the General Directorate of Customs, results in the customs zones: Durrës, Tirana, Kakavijë, Qafë Botë/Sarandë, Morinë and then other customs zones.
During 2024, from the controls carried out by the Land Anti-Smuggling units, 22 cases of goods suspected of trademark infringement were identified and blocked, which were forwarded for further verification to the Directorate of Intellectual Property Protection.
