Europeans, with travel permits to Britain - Visitors must pay a 10 pound fee to

European visitors to Britain will have to purchase an electronic travel permit starting April 2. The UK's move follows the example of other countries in efforts to strengthen immigration security.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme requires all visitors who do not need a visa to enter Britain to purchase the authorization before travel at a cost of 10 pounds (12 euros), increasing to 16 pounds from April 9. Irish citizens are exempt from this measure.

The regime initially applied to non-European nationals last year, including visitors from the United States, Canada and Australia.

"The expansion of the Authorization worldwide reinforces our commitment to enhancing security through technology and innovation," Immigration Minister Seema Malhotra said last month.

Britain's Home Office, or home ministry, said applying for an ETA should be simple through the app, with most applicants receiving an automated response within minutes.

Applicants upload a photograph and biographical details, as well as answer questions about eligibility and criminal record. Once the application is successfully completed, the authorization is digitally linked to the relevant passport.

An ETA allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months over a two-year period. Airlines, ferry and train companies will be responsible for verifying the status of travellers before boarding.

Budget airline easyJet said it did not expect the new permit to reduce demand for travel from Europe to Britain. The United Kingdom welcomed 22.5 million visitors from the European Union in 2023, up from 19.0 million in 2022, according to official data.

Delayed post-Brexit EU border security checks for UK citizens entering the bloc are scheduled to be introduced in October. Britain left the EU in 2020.

The EU's entry-exit system will remove the requirement to manually stamp passports at the bloc's external borders and instead create digital data that links a travel document to a person's identity.

This system will be a precursor to the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which will also require citizens outside the Schengen area to pay a fee before traveling.

Britons currently pay around 17 pounds for a similar permit that allows them to enter the US.
