211.8 MW of energy licensed/Solar energy dominates with 16 projects, 4 more hydropower plants planned

The first ten months of 2025 have seen a high number of licenses issued for electricity production. According to official data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, a total of 20 companies were licensed for the period January - October, for projects with a total projected installed capacity of 211.8 MW.
The data shows a clear dominance of solar energy, with 192 MW licensed. The projects belong to 16 different companies, while the licensed plants are expected to be located in the Fier Region, with the exception of one that will be in Kukës. However, while the increase in electricity production capacities seems to be focused on solar plants, during the 10 months of 2025, 4 licenses for hydropower plants were also granted, for projects with a total installed capacity of 19.8 MW.
The situation is different for wind energy, which currently remains unexploited in our country. Even during the period January - October 2025, no company was licensed in this activity, while there are only 2 active licenses issued by the Energy Regulatory Authority in the years 2007 -2008.
Meanwhile, given the fact that a considerable number of electricity sources are expected to be built and connected to the grid, the Energy Regulatory Authority emphasizes the need for more dynamic development and investments to integrate these sources into the Albanian electricity system in the coming years.
