South Korea dominates vehicle imports - January-May 2025, registrations increase. Over 38 thousand new cars in circulation
The vehicle market in Albania is experiencing significant expansion. According to the Directorate of Road Transport Services, 38,028 new vehicles were registered during the period January-May 2025, of which 81.2% of the total are cars. These data show an increase of 102% compared to the same period in 2019.
In terms of the origin of funds, South Korea, with 20.4% of the total, ranks first in the preferences of Albanian citizens. It is followed by Italy with 16.1%; Germany with 15.9%; Switzerland with 9.1%; the USA with 7.8% and China with 7.3%.
A positive trend towards vehicle modernization is also evident. According to data from the General Directorate of Road Transport Services, for the period January-May 2025, the fleet was renewed and 6,786 latest generation vehicles, in the 0-3 year category, were registered. This shows an increase of 64% compared to the same period in 2023, demonstrating an increase in citizens' awareness of the use of safer, more economical and less environmentally polluting vehicles.
On the other hand, an increase in permanent deregistrations has also been observed, with 3,137 old vehicles removed from circulation, or 15% more than in 2024. Often these vehicles have been depreciated with low technical and environmental standards.
The DPSHTRR instructs all drivers, both new and existing, to respect road traffic rules, to carry out periodic checks of their vehicles and before importing new vehicles.
Also, for all citizens planning to import a vehicle from abroad, the DPSHTRR emphasizes the need to verify the environmental category before making the purchase, in order to avoid additional costs or problems related to non-compliance with environmental standards.
