5.8 million euros are transferred to the accounts of freelancers - The prepaid installments of tax-profit are returned. 7157 subjects benefit
The tax administration has finalized the process of returning the payments of the preliminary installments of the Simplified Income Tax, or Income Tax for 7157 independent professionals who had paid the installments as a result of the income tax law.
The total value refunded is about 576 million Lek or 5.8 million euros, which have been transferred to the bank accounts of the entities that offer professional services.
Freelancers had until December 18th to declare their bank account details in order to receive the prepaid installments.
At the end of November, the Council of Ministers approved the normative act for the return of income tax installments prepaid by self-employed professionals. It was also decided to cancel interest arrears created by late payment of obligations.
The income tax law, which entered into force on January 1, 2024, taxed nearly 29,000 freelancers at a rate of 15-23%. The professionals did not agree with this tax regime and took the case to the Constitutional Court. After several hearings, the Constitutional Court decided to abolish the article that taxed this layer, calling it discriminatory. But during this period, a good part of them had repaid the corresponding obligations.
In the following, the government, within the framework of the medium-term revenue strategy 2024-2027, will make an assessment of all the exemptions and reductions of the tax rates that are in force, whether they should remain, or should be revised, including the review of taxation for this category as well.
