Durrës-Rrogozhina Railway, under rehabilitation - 120.5 million euro loans with EIB and EBRD towards final approval
Loans for the rehabilitation of the Durrës - Rrogozhina railway line are moving towards approval, paving the way for the tender for the works. The total cost of the project is estimated at 120.5 million euros and will be co-financed through loans from the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The EIB financing amounts to 90 million euros and a few days ago the Albanian government approved the financial contract in principle. Meanwhile, the official signing will take place on April 8. In parallel, the EBRD has also announced that the 30 million euro loan has passed the final review and the approval is expected to be made by April 30.
According to the European Investment Bank, the project aims to rehabilitate, modernize, electrify and consequently bring into line with European Union standards, 34 km of single-track railway line from the port of Durres to Rrogozhina. “This part of the line was initially opened in 1950 and has since undergone only normal maintenance. The infrastructure is in poor condition and not in line with European standards,” the EIB said.
"The project, together with other investments and sectoral reforms, is expected to contribute to the shift of movement from road to rail and thus generate economic benefits in terms of operation, safety and the environment," it further adds.
Meanwhile, the railway line of the rehabilitation project follows the existing one and after the completion of the works it is expected that the trains will have a speed of 120 kilometers/hour. This segment is part of the Durrës - Pogradec railway line, a continuation of the VIII railway corridor, a 1500 km multimodal corridor, connecting Italian ports with the port of Durrës, North Macedonia and the Bulgarian ports of Varna and Burgas on the Black Sea.
