Serbia "prepares" the new government - Who is Vučić's chosen one to lead the country?
Serbia will have a new government by April 18 with Đuro Macut as prime minister, President Aleksandar Vučić announced.
The Balkan country's previous government fell in March after months of protests sparked by a deadly roof collapse at a train station. The rallies were fueled by public anger that accused the government of corruption and flouting democratic norms.
"It will be a big task for the new government to continue to maintain peace and stability, as well as to act with patience. The government must have a clear commitment to the future and our goal is to return Serbia to the winner's pedestal and have the fastest growing economy by the end of the year," Vučić said.
The new prime minister, Đuro Macut, an endocrinologist with no political experience, is likely to be in office at least until 2027, when Serbia holds simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections. Lawmakers have until April 18 to approve him, or risk setting the stage for early elections.
Vucic added that he expects to meet with United States President Donald Trump in the coming months and will discuss the issue of tariffs.
On April 2, as part of a wave of U.S. tariffs on countries around the world, Trump announced a 38 percent tariff on Serbia, which will take effect this week. That figure was the highest in Europe, although the overseas territories of some European countries will be subject to higher tariffs.
