Rama is honored with the Presidential Medal of Honor in Israel: I am receiving it on behalf of all Albanians!
Prime Minister Edi Rama was honored with the Presidential Medal of Honor awarded by the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, a medal awarded specifically to high-ranking personalities, such as Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Elie Wiesel, Henry Kissinger, Joe Biden, who have previously been honored with this medal.
Prime Minister Rama was presented with the Medal of Honor at a special ceremony, organized at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem, where he was invited with his wife, Linda Rama, and the Albanian delegation accompanying him on this visit.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said, "The Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor honors those like you who have illuminated the world with their extraordinary leadership, moral clarity and democratic values, and those who have proven their courageous friendship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel."
The Israeli president recalled his visit to Tirana in September, saying, "I was personally moved by your compassion and touching gift to Idit Ohel, the mother of Alon Ohel, who is still being held in Hamas' basements in violation of every human and ethical principle. We must bring her and every other hostage home."
Furthermore, the Israeli president also spoke about further increasing cooperation between the two countries.
“The vision of our partnership and friendship goes beyond just two nations. It embodies the model of partnership between ethnicities and religious beliefs, which is why we have with us today such important religious leaders who can help transform the Eastern Mediterranean from a region of conflict, into a corridor of cooperation and connectivity, and into a tolerant model of peace for the Middle East, Europe, to India and further to the Far East, to Southeast Asia and beyond. Jewish tradition teaches us that the world stands on three equal pillars: Justice, Truth and Peace,” he noted.
Rama said that "this extraordinary honor cannot be for me alone, but I accept it on behalf of Albania, on behalf of the Albanian people, and above all, on behalf of all Muslim and Christian Albanians, who put themselves and their lives at risk during the darkest hours of modern history and turned my country into the only country in Europe that ended World War II with more Jews than at its beginning."
Unlike other countries, Rama emphasized, Albania became a refuge for the Jewish people and, unlike other countries, Jews did not leave, but came to find refuge, to find protection and to be safe.
"I want to reiterate here that, as it has been, not only during World War II, but three times in history, a land where Jews found refuge and protection, Albania will always be your second home and you will always be welcome in Albania," Prime Minister Rama concluded.
