Governor Sejko meets the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Reinout Vos
The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, received in an official meeting the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Reinout Vos.
During the meeting, Governor Sejko briefed the Ambassador on the current economic and financial situation, as well as the outlook for the Albanian economy, in the context of the European integration process, but also of the growing uncertainty in the external environment. He highlighted the progress made by the Albanian economy over the last decade, emphasizing that economic growth has enabled real progress in the convergence process with the European Union and that the main indicators of the country's economic and financial stability - inflation, the country's public and foreign debt, as well as the health of the banking sector - have improved.
Governor Sejko added that the stability of the financial system and the improvement of the country's fiscal and external sustainability indicators have been reflected in a further improvement in Albania's sovereign debt risk ranking by Standard & Poor's in March 2025, bringing it to BB.
Another important development is related to the membership in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). The Bank of Albania has been focused on commercial banks submitting applications to the European Payments Council (EPC) for their membership in SEPA, intensively guiding them in the application process and acting as the National Support Center for the Accession Process. “Already, all 11 banks of the Albanian banking system prepared the relevant applications within a relatively short time, with the aim of the first cross-border SEPA transactions being carried out at the beginning of October 2025,” the Governor underlined. The Bank of Albania has made an important contribution in this regard. Prudent monetary, supervisory and regulatory policies have created a calm and secure monetary and financial environment, which has been reflected in the continuous increase in lending and foreign investors’ interest in the Albanian market. The Governor also underlined the role of the Bank of Albania in the European integration process, as an important institutional actor in the negotiation process, but also as a reliable partner of European institutions.
Ambassador Vos praised the progress made by the Albanian economy during this period, emphasizing that the country’s macroeconomic stability is a valuable achievement of the country on its path to membership in the European Union. He also praised the work of the Bank of Albania in fulfilling its legal duties, and – in particular – in developing the payment system and financial education.
Ambassador Vos expressed the Netherlands' full support for the accession process.
At the end of the meeting, Governor Sejko and Ambassador Vos expressed their willingness to further develop cooperation between the Bank of Albania and the central bank of the Netherlands, mainly in the field of the financial system.
