Financing for the Durrës – Rrogozhina railway - Government approves loan with EIB, segment part of Corridor VIII
The government has approved the financial agreement with the European Investment Bank for the Durrës-Rrogozhina railway, part of Corridor VIII. The draft law on the ratification of the financial contract for the financing of the first phase of the project "Railway Infrastructure of Corridor VIII - Albania" was approved at the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, while the final link is the discussion in the parliamentary committees and approval in the plenary session.
The agreement, signed in April in Tirana, includes a €90 million loan from the EIB and is part of a combined financial package totaling €120.5 million. The remaining financing will be covered by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which received approval from the EBRD just a few days ago.
The project aims to rehabilitate and modernize the Durrës–Rrogozhinë railway line, a 34-kilometer segment. The line will be electrified and brought into line with European Union standards, enabling train travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h. The investment is part of Corridor VIII, a strategic pan-European axis connecting Italy with Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, serving as a hub for passenger transport, freight and potentially for military mobility purposes.
Beyond the economic and strategic benefits, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the environment by shifting traffic from roads to railways, significantly reducing pollution and carbon emissions.
