Greece has imposed a 20-euro fee on tourists arriving in Santorini by cruise ship, in an effort to control overtourism and raise revenue to be used to improve the country's infrastructure.
The volcanic island in the Aegean Sea attracts around 2 million tourists a year, but with a population of around 15,000 and growing concerns about seismic activity, the government has sought to reduce the impact of tourism.
The introduction of this fee follows moves in other parts of Europe, where residents are angry at rising rental prices and the exploitation of resources by tourists.
Greek authorities will start collecting the 20-euro tax for each passenger on July 21. The fee will drop to 12 euros in October and drop to 4 euros from November to March. It will then return to 12 euros from April to May of next year.
A tourist from Canada said the measure would not make a difference. "I don't think 20 euros has any impact on people's decision to visit the country or not."
Likewise, a shop owner said that "no one will spare 20 euros to visit a destination like this."
However, cruise ship operators say the fee is unfair. According to them, the measure only targets cruise ships and serves to collect taxes. But it "will not help reduce overtourism," they explain.
