Greece, the island of Crete is engulfed in flames - About 3,000 people are evacuated due to fires
Massive wildfires on the island of Crete have forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Extreme heat waves are sweeping across Europe, causing loss of life in recent days.
Massive wildfires have swept through the island of Crete, a popular holiday destination in Greece. The flames have scorched forest land and homes, prompting the evacuation of residents and tourists in some areas.
At least 155 firefighters, assisted by 38 fire engines and water trucks, battled the flames in the municipality of Ierapetra on the island's southeastern coast, according to Greek sources.
Local media reported that several houses were damaged. So far, there have been no reports of injuries. Authorities had earlier ordered the evacuation of Achlia and three other settlements in the wider area. About 3,000 people, who had previously been evacuated from the villages, were taken to temporary shelters, local officials said.
Greece, located on the southernmost tip of Europe, is often hit by wildfires during its hot, dry summers, and authorities have blamed climate change for fueling the most destructive fires in recent years. Greek firefighters are also trying to put out a blaze on the island of Kythira and another in the northern region of Halkidiki.
Extreme heat waves have swept across Europe this week, causing fatalities. Four people died in Spain, two in France and two in Italy due to the high temperatures.
Spanish officials said a fire in Catalonia had killed two people a day earlier, and authorities reported heat-related deaths in Extremadura and Cordoba. France's energy ministry also reported two heat-related deaths, while 300 others were taken to hospital.
