What hinders cooperation between Albania and the region? - RCC: History and

Lack of trust inherited from the past and nationalist politics remain the main obstacles to regional economic cooperation, according to the latest findings of the Balkan Barometer 2025 report. In Albania, 43% of respondents assess that history and lack of trust are the main factor hindering cooperation between Western Balkan economies, one of the highest percentages in the region.

According to the report, 36% of Albanian citizens blame nationalist politics, while 22% cite prejudice between countries as a serious obstacle. Infrastructure problems rank lower, at 16%, indicating that political and social barriers are perceived as more important than physical ones.

Meanwhile, 21% of respondents in Albania highlight ethnic divisions as a problem, while 20% think that external global influences are harming regional cooperation. Religious differences are seen as a less problematic factor, with only 4% of responses.

Compared to the regional average, Albania results in a higher concern about the lack of historical trust, reflecting that the challenges for economic integration and cooperation are not only infrastructure or market issues, but are closely related to the political climate and relations between states.

The Balkan Barometer report is published annually and is considered one of the most important measurements of public perception in the Western Balkans on economic development, regional cooperation and European integration.
