"Energy, Albania's most advanced chapter with the EU"/ Alia: Group Chapter 4 less voluminous, but more technical

"Energy, Albania's most advanced chapter with the EU"/ Alia:

The more chapters are opened with the European Union, the more Albania's work increases to align its legislation with that of the Union, implement this legislation in practice, and achieve the standards required by the European family.

According to Integration Expert, Lorela Alia, in this group of chapters, Albania has made the most visible progress in the energy sector, while it has low preparation in the other 3 chapters related to transport, environment and trans-European networks.

"The chapter on energy is the most advanced chapter, where according to the European Commission it shows that Albania has an average preparation and receives a score of 3.5 out of 5, while the other 3 chapters related to transport, environment and the trans-European network, Albania has some preparation and receives a score of 2 out of 5, also regarding the 2020-2024 time period, Albania has had limited progress and this limited progress, if it continues at the same pace and continuously, will be a very big challenge to conclude this chapter group in 2027, as is the objective of the Albanian government", said Alia.

However, this chapter group, like many others, has several challenges, which in this case are related to the environment, such as the lack of waste treatment and protected areas.

"The biggest challenge will be the approximation to European Union standards. And of course this approximation to European Union standards requires billions of euros of investment and of course high expertise for this group chapter. Also, another challenge regarding this group chapter has to do with absorption, our ability in fact to absorb funds from the European Union for projects related to this group chapter," she said.

According to the Expert, although this chapter group is less voluminous than most other chapters, it still remains very technical and will require longer deadlines for its closure.
