Solar energy reaches record in Albania - 13.2% of domestic production in 2025, production from hydropower plants decreases

Electricity produced by solar plants has increased significantly during 2025, reaching for the first time 13.2% of the net domestic electricity production. The data is published in the annual electricity balance by the Institute of Statistics.
According to the data, during 2025 the electricity available in Albania reached 8,345 GWh, with an increase of 2.1% compared to 2024. However, net domestic production decreased, falling to 7,468 GWh, or 4.7% less than a year earlier.
In the structure of domestic production, hydropower plants continue to hold the main weight. Public hydropower plants produced 45.2% of energy, while private and concessionary producers 41.6%. The remaining 13.2% was produced precisely from other renewable sources, namely photovoltaics. In absolute terms, production from these sources almost doubled, reaching 984 GWh, from 507 GWh in 2024, or an increase of 94.3% within a year.
The increase in solar power generation comes at a time when hydropower generation has declined, largely due to water conditions. Public hydropower plants produced 3,374 GWh, or 17.4% less than in 2024.
Meanwhile, rising demand for electricity and declining domestic production have also increased dependence on imports. Electricity imports increased by 26.5%, reaching 3,375 gWh, while exports increased by 7%, to 2,498 gWh.
Meanwhile, losses in the electricity grid marked a slight decrease during 2025. They reached 1,593 gWh, from 1,614 gWh the previous year, reducing by about 1.3%. As a result, the share of losses in total available energy fell to 19.1%, from 19.8% in 2024.
