What are the flood protection projects? - 15 of them are ongoing, the budget finances the rehabilitation of 10 km of embankments

Albania is facing bad weather and intense rainfall, with consequences in flooding of agricultural lands and economic damage for Albanian families. But what measures are being taken to prevent the flooding phenomenon?
Referring to the list of investments, there are 15 flood protection infrastructure projects that are ongoing and will be financed during the next year, with some of them being fully completed. Specifically, these are the projects: Retaining wall in the Roskovec-Hoxhare Collector, Fier; Rehabilitation of the Borsh River; Protection from the Kalasa River (Shelegar Cascade); Repair of the Protective Embankment of the K17 Butrint Collector; Protection from the Kalasa River (Vana Cascade); Repair of the Left Embankment of the Seman River; Protection from the Shushice River in Vranisht, Vlora; Protection from the Shushica River in Drashovice, Vlora; Protection from the Vjose River, right arm, Kashisht; Protection from erosion and flooding from the Osum River in Starove – Remanicë; Protective Embankment from the Shkumbin River in Fatisht, Peqin Municipality; Protection from erosion of the Mat River in Skuraj, Ferr village; Protection from erosion of the Drin River in Bahçallëk, Shkodër; Protection from erosion of the Kir River (former wood field) and the mouth of the Gryke Manati stream into the Drin River (L=0.46 km).
As for new projects receiving funding, the construction of flood protection facilities is expected in 2026, while the rehabilitation of the Buna River embankment, Darragjat Shkodër and the Buna River Oblikë Protection Project are expected to begin in 2027.
As for the hydropower plants, the reconstruction of 4 hydropower plants, in Hamallaj, Orikum, Synej, Grethe, are ongoing projects, while 2 million euros are planned to be financed for other reconstructions from 2028 and onwards.
The total fund for managing flood protection and irrigation-drainage infrastructure for next year is 36 million euros, or 26.4% more than the previous year.
This fund envisages the rehabilitation and construction of 10 km of embankments on the main rivers for flood protection, the completion of the Orikum dam, and the maintenance of 27 dams across the country. On the other hand, it finances the improvement of drainage on over 60 thousand hectares of agricultural land.
Meanwhile, the fund allocated for municipal facilities and Water Supply and Sewerage Directorates for this purpose for 2026 is around 116 million euros, which is distributed to 21 municipalities and are all ongoing projects.
