New power plants produced 1.81% of energy - ERE: 26 plants were added to production capacities, 18 of them are solar
1.81% of electricity was produced by plants that entered production during 2024. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, last year the net annual production from these plants reached 142,492 MWh, not including the Karavasta solar power plant, which is counted in the production of the Albanian Power Corporation. This is due to the contract concluded between the parties for the purchase of the entire amount of energy produced by this plant.
In total, 26 plants, with an installed capacity of 269.95 MW, entered production last year. This includes solar power plants, but also hydroelectric power plants that added to the country's production capacity.
According to the ERE, the hydropower sources that were added last year have an installed capacity of 14 MW, while photovoltaic sources hold the largest share with 255.95 MW.
A total of 18 photovoltaic power plants entered production during 2024, contributing to the growth of solar energy in the country. Together with existing plants, the total capacity reaches 449 MW. Most of the plants that entered production during the past year are small, with a capacity of 2 MW, but there is also a lack of large plants with a power of 20 - 140 MW.
The increase in the share of solar energy is important in terms of diversifying energy production sources, as our country is dependent on hydropower sources. Currently, according to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, there are 38 solar power plants in production.
