Can Canada join the EU? - Tensions with Trump "incite" citizens to

As U.S. President Donald Trump is upending relations with his northern neighbor through punitive tariffs and aggressive social media posts, Canadians are wondering whether they should reach out to new, more reliable allies.

In a recent poll, a staggering 44 percent of Canadians said they supported the idea of EU membership, compared to just 34 percent who rejected the idea.

A European Commission spokeswoman noted that Brussels was "honored by the results of such a survey," but confirmed that only European countries are eligible for membership, according to the bloc's governing treaties.

But while Canada's accession to the EU may seem implausible even to the Commission, EU experts said such a move is unlikely to succeed, but not impossible. "Canada would certainly meet the conditions."

Although separated by the Atlantic Ocean and thousands of kilometers, Canada and the EU share many common interests: strong economic ties, shared democratic values, and the tensions being caused by the US administration of Donald Trump.

This raises the question: is there something beyond basic geography that makes a country European, and could Canada join?

Candidate countries include the Western Balkan states, as well as Ukraine and Moldova, which are progressing, albeit slowly, on the path to the EU, but also Turkey and Georgia, which have stalled due to problems with democracy and concerns over the rule of law.

Any decision would ultimately belong to the European Commission and the bloc's member states.

When the EU's southern neighbor, Morocco, applied for membership in 1987, its application was rejected on the grounds that it was not a European country. Finally, giving Canada the green light to join the EU could disappoint some countries, like Turkey, that have been waiting their turn for decades.

New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made his first foreign trip to France on March 17 to discuss building stronger economic, defense and trade ties with French President Emmanuel Macron.

But he may have also made a fatal mistake for long-term EU ambitions when he called Canada “the most European of non-European countries.” This could backfire if Canada ever submits an application for membership.
