Food product control is strengthened - Ministry of Agriculture Instruction: With identification tags from January 1, 2026
From January 1, 2026, all food products traded in the country will have to be equipped with an identification indicator called "lot", according to a new instruction from the Ministry of Agriculture. The new instruction aims to establish a food product traceability system at every link in the food chain, from production to sale.
According to the guidance published in the Official Journal, the lot will be a code with letters or numbers, which is set by the manufacturer or processor. This indicator will enable the accurate identification of the production batch of a product and will help the authorities to better monitor and manage any potential food safety problems. Any food product placed on the market after January 1, 2026 will have to bear this code.
Exceptions to this rule are agricultural products delivered directly to processing stations; products at the point of sale to the final consumer, when they are not pre-packaged; as well as very small packages, with a surface area of less than 10 cm².
Meanwhile, the codes must be marked on the label or packaging and be legible and visible. In cases where the products have a use-by date, the lot indication is not mandatory, but on condition that the date is complete and legible.
On the other hand, products that were labeled before the entry into force of this instruction may be marketed until the end of existing stocks, with the obligation for the National Food Authority to record the quantity until their complete sale, according to the instruction.
The General Directorate for Development in the Field of Food Safety and the National Food Authority have been tasked with implementing this instruction. The instruction will enter into force on January 1st of next year.
