Energy production in the country falls - Balance for the 3 months / Solar energy increases, losses in the electrical network decrease
Around 2.23 million MWh of energy was produced during the first quarter of this year from all generating sources in the country, marking a 9.8% decrease compared to a year earlier, when around 2.48 million MWh of energy was generated in the same period. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, this production was realized by public hydropower plants to the extent of 45.8% and by private and concessionary hydropower plants to the extent of 46.3%.
In parallel, energy production from photovoltaic plants has continued, while the amount generated for the period January - March of this year constitutes 7.9% of the total energy produced in the country. Compared to the same period last year, the increase is significant, as in the first quarter of 2024 solar energy accounted for 3.2%.
Meanwhile, gross imports of electricity in the period January - March 2025 reached 767 gWh, marking an increase of 43.4%, while exports decreased by 10.1%.
At the same time, data shows that network losses decreased by 0.9%. The share of network losses in total available electricity during the first quarter of 2025 is 21.1%, down from 22% in the first quarter of 2024.
Meanwhile, consumption increased by 4.4%, reaching 1,791 gWh from 1,716 gWh in the first quarter of 2024. The increase in electricity use was influenced by household consumers, where we have an increase in consumption by 8.7%, while the energy consumed by non-household consumers decreased by 1.3%, compared to the first quarter of 2024.
