Europeans choose trains - Half of citizens prefer rail transport to airplanes

Train travel is experiencing a renaissance and Europeans are in favor of the change, according to a recent survey. A survey of 11,000 people by railway manufacturer Hitachi Rail found that almost half of respondents intend to travel more by train and less by plane in the next five years.

Globally, over seven in ten said they would use public transport more if there were better connections, while more than half would use it even if it cost more.

New research found that citizens in countries across Europe and North America predict that train travel will increase significantly in the coming years, reducing flights.

Rail currently accounts for around a third (29 percent) of long-distance journeys, which are 2.5 hours or more. A third of people surveyed also expect to travel more by train in the next 12 months. In the next five years, this will increase to 40 percent between countries and 49 percent between cities.

In contrast, air travel is expected to stagnate, with only 2 percent expecting to fly more in the same time period. According to the data, car travel is predicted to increase, but by 50 percent less than train travel.

The desire for more train travel in the future is also met by a clear majority (62 percent) supporting legislation to ban short-haul flights where high-speed rail alternatives exist.

In Europe, where there is a growing number of high-speed rail lines, support rises to 67 percent. Such legislation has already been introduced in France and is also proposed in Spain.
