Elbasan-Lekaj highway, first 20 km almost completed after 1 year - Rama: Infrastructure program, also within the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Fund
Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, have inspected the construction works for the Elbasan - Lekaj highway, part of Corridor 8. According to Balluku, in the spring of 2026, the first 20 km of this segment will be delivered.
"We are in corridor 8, in one of the third phase construction sites. This is one of the most important corridors of road infrastructure and will also be a railway in the future. It will be divided into three phases. We have the phase from Elbasan to the new border exit, namely at the Bushtricë bridge. We have the Elbasan Bypass, which is the second phase, and this is the third phase from Elbasan towards Rrogozhina. There are 40 km in this third phase. We are working on about the first 20 km, since we started from Elbasan to the Cërriku turn and then from Cërriku to Papër and the Grykshit Bridge ," said Balluku.
Rama spoke about the infrastructure program, which according to him is also being implemented within the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Fund.
"Today, the financial support of EU programs for Albania remains 90% loans, of course soft loans from European development banks, but loans. Even the railways, which are a new package that has already been opened, are also in this framework," said Rama.
The Elbasan-Lekaj segment is 40.7 km long. As part of Corridor 8, it is 26 meters wide with two lanes and one emergency lane, thus handling a flow of about 40 thousand vehicles per 24 hours under normal conditions. The route is almost completely open and the road structure is about 50% complete.
