The most expensive cities in the world - Monaco tops the list of the 10 most luxurious countries
Every year, Henley & Partners, also known as the definitive authority on luxury real estate, releases its golden list of the most expensive cities on the planet.
The ranking is based on the price per square meter for apartments of 100-200 square meters. This year there were no surprises at the top of the ranking. The usual suspects are back and continue to cause dizziness with their sums.
At the top is Monaco, a city-state that is significantly distant from the rest. There, the price of an apartment is so high that for that money you could buy a small island. The average price exceeds 35,000 euros per square meter, so a house of 150 square meters costs 5.25 million euros.
Monaco is followed by the planet's elite. Cities that symbolize extravagant lifestyles, investment status, and forced rent for us mere mortals: Hong Kong, New York, London, and Hollywood's glamorous Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat make it clear that luxury has geographical coordinates. These places complete the top five.
A fun fact about the list is that France is the country with the most cities and regions in the top 20. From the aristocratic splendor of Paris to the golden sands and blue seas of the Côte d'Azur, the land of Champagne knows luxury well and it shows. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paris, Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Èze all fly the French flag.
The French capital ranks sixth, followed by Sydney, Australia. The top ten most expensive cities are Palm Beach, Miami Beach and Los Angeles.
