Even with a decrease in the number of students in the auditoriums of Albanian universities, data from the Ministry of Finance shows that during the past year, just over 1 billion lek were collected from public and private universities.

This figure fulfilled the plan drafted by the Ministry of Finance to achieve revenue from higher education, which had the objective of collecting 1 billion lek from these institutions by 2024.

Despite this, data from the Institute of Statistics shows that the number of students enrolled in higher education has suffered a 14% decline during the period 2020-2023. During 2023, enrollments reached around 84 thousand, a significant decrease compared to the pandemic years, when the number of students was higher.

During the 2023-2024 academic year alone, over 11,000 high school graduates applied to study abroad, a figure that indicates the ever-growing preference for international education.

This occurred at a time when the government is trying to keep students in Albania by offering scholarships and other opportunities, promoting several study programs that have been declared “national priorities.” Meanwhile, universities abroad continue to offer greater opportunities.
