"Unlimited" Internet in 2024 - AKEP: Albanians consumed more GB, but

During 2024, Albanians consumed more internet, but fewer minutes and SMS messages. The internet is increasingly being used for communication, but also for education, entertainment, or business.

Newly published data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority shows that there were around 3.3 million active SIM cards in circulation in Albania at the end of 2024, around 1.4 SIM cards per inhabitant, a figure higher than the European and global average. However, the number of SIM cards has decreased by 12% compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, it seems that the increased use of the internet for sending messages through applications such as WhatsApp is replacing the traditional form of sending SMS messages. The number of SMS messages sent during 2024 was around 384 million, a decrease of almost 6.8% compared to 2023.

On the other hand, the total number of active mobile phone users reached 2.5 million in 2024, up from 2.6 million in 2023.

In terms of total outgoing calls generated by mobile subscribers in Albania, in 2024 there were about 3 billion and 970 million minutes, about 7.6% less than in 2024, where the total number of calls was 4.3 billion minutes.

The volume of data transmitted via the Internet on mobile networks reached about 223 million GigaBytes in the year just ended. Official statistics show that the average monthly consumption per active user of mobile services during the October-December period was 145 outgoing minutes, 13 SMS and 8.94 GB of Internet.

As of January 2023, there are only two mobile operators on the market. In February of this year, the Competition Authority also opened a preliminary investigation into Vodafone and One Albania, following complaints filed regarding the increase in the price of paid packages. This investigation was initiated with the argument that the conduct of the companies may constitute a restriction of competition, so there is a possibility that the two companies have entered into an agreement to fix prices, limit production, or divide markets and customers.

Depending on the outcome of the investigations, the Competition Authority will decide whether or not to sanction these two companies with a fine.
