EU, 1.3 billion euros for cybersecurity - Investment plan covers the period

Cybersecurity firms could soon see the benefits of a new round of investment from the European Union. The European Commission said the Digital Europe Programme will include a €1.3 billion reserve for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital skills.

The plan calls for a series of investments between 2025 and 2027 to fund projects around cyber resilience and critical infrastructure security, including healthcare providers and underwater cable installations.

Additionally, the dedicated funds could go towards financing artificial intelligence projects around cybersecurity and educational programs that would teach data security, among other skills. The investment is part of an overall program that calls for 8.1 billion euros in funding for technology products for the four-year period 2023-2027.

"Solutions like the EU cybersecurity reserve will improve the resilience and security of critical infrastructures, including hospitals and submarine cables," the commission announced.

In order to qualify for the funding, companies will need to have a base in an EU member state, a criterion that could put companies from the US and UK in a difficult situation, given their recent relations with the continent.

The United Kingdom continues to grapple with the economic and regulatory implications of leaving the EU. Meanwhile, the United States has increased tensions with the European Union following the Trump administration's decisions to impose tariffs on foreign goods.

With the announcement of the program, the EU is seeking to pursue its own path in developing technologies in key areas of education, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The bloc's officials noted the need to innovate its own technologies while distancing itself from the United States and Asia, traditionally the centers of technological innovation.
