Free public WiFi for Albanian municipalities - EU opens call for applications. Around 500 beneficiaries across the region
Albanian municipalities can benefit from free public WiFi from the European Union. The EU has launched a call for all municipalities in the Western Balkans to apply from March 28 to April 28 for free Wi-Fi hotspots.
The number of beneficiary municipalities will be 500 across the region. The Wi-Fi access points will be installed in public spaces such as squares, parks, libraries, museums and schools, providing free and stable internet access for residents and visitors.
Participating municipalities will receive comprehensive support, including the supply and installation of Wi-Fi equipment, internet service and maintenance. In return, municipalities are required to commit to maintaining the service beyond the initial funding period, ensuring sustainability and long-term impact.
The initiative will fully finance the installation of a WiFi access point in a public location chosen by the municipality. Professional internet service providers will take care of the technical equipment, maintenance and initial internet services to ensure a simple and reliable experience for users.
The application for the public call must be submitted by the Mayor, an official employed by the municipality or a member of the municipal council. During the application process, a Signed Proof of Agreement must be uploaded, confirming the Mayor’s agreement to participate in the WiFi4WB Initiative.
For municipalities, this is an opportunity for them to improve their local digital infrastructure, while for residents it is an opportunity to enjoy free and reliable Wi-Fi.
This initiative is part of the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which supports digital transformation and empowers local communities.
