5 cubic meters of water per month for free for families in need - 31 million lek were distributed in 2024. Pogradec, Korça and Kukës are leading
Around 31 million lek is the amount spent during 2024 to compensate for the minimum vital amount of water for families in need. According to data from the Water Regulatory Authority, each of the families has benefited from 5 m³ of water per month for free, while the money has been transferred to water supply and sewage companies as a subsidy from the state budget.
The value obtained for the needy that has been applied to 14 regional companies and to the water supply companies of Tirana and Vora. Meanwhile, in terms of the distribution of money, the Pogradec Regional Company is at the top of the list with about 8.6 million lek, followed by the water supply companies of Korça and Kukës.
The coverage of 5 m³/water per month for families in need began to be applied after the approval of an instruction by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy on the use of subsidies received by Water Supply and Sewerage Companies from the state for the year 2024. The instruction specified only 2 priorities for the use of budget funds, which were the settlement of electricity bills and the compensation of the minimum vital amount of water for families in need.
This includes families with no income or insufficient income, orphans who are not in social care institutions or parents with more than 2 children born at the same time, who belong to families in need. Also beneficiaries are victims of trafficking after leaving social care institutions, until the moment of their employment, as well as victims of violence in domestic relationships for the period of validity of the protection order or immediate protection order, who are not treated in social care institutions.
This is the first year that compensation for the minimum amount of water for families in need was included in the guidelines for the use of state subsidies by water supply and sewerage companies.
