12.9 million euros from beach use - Which of the 6 coastal municipalities collected the most revenue?
Coastal municipalities have increased collections from beach usage fees from private entities, however below their potential.
According to official data, businesses operating in tourist areas and having a contract with the National Coastal Agency for the occupation of public spaces have paid approximately 4.8 million euros in taxes throughout 2024.
Meanwhile, for the period 2022-2024, it results that from the data reported by the National Coastal Agency, 12.9 million euros have been collected.
But which municipalities generated the most revenue from beach use during 2024?
Data shows that the Municipality of Durrës, which has a longer coastline, generated more revenue, approximately 1.2 million euros, during the past year.
Followed by the Municipality of Himara, which has collected 1.18 million euros in revenue from the use of beaches, then comes the Municipality of Saranda with 781 thousand euros, the Municipality of Lezhë with 657 thousand euros, the Municipality of Vlorë has collected 596 thousand euros, and finally comes the Municipality of Shkodër with 458 thousand euros.
In Albania, for 2024, there are 817 entities equipped with contracts for the use of beach space for the tourist season.
Despite the performance and increasing trend of revenues in each municipality, they have not been in direct proportion to the increase in contracted areas for the period 2022-2024. While contracted areas in coastal municipalities reflect an increase of 45%-253%, revenues from the collection of the fee applied to contracted areas have an increase of 7%-37%.
For the period June-August 2024, the number of umbrellas was approximately 699 thousand. The number of invoices with the description umbrella/sunbed is 402,120.
The specific weight according to the type of activity of taxpayers who are beneficiaries of public spaces on beaches is divided into several categories, where the most important item is that of hotels and similar structures with 27%.
Meanwhile, 23% are occupied by beverage service activities; 19% are in the Restaurants and mobile food service sector and 14% are in the other activities other than tourism.
