EU spending in Albania and Montenegro/ MEPs hold budget control in Tirana and Podgorica
A delegation from the Committee on Budgetary Control, led by Chair Niclas Herbst, will visit Albania and Montenegro from 16 to 18 September 2025. MEPs will assess the establishment and initial functioning of the new control and audit mechanisms created under the Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans, which aims to guarantee the sound financial management of EU funds.
In Podgorica, MEPs will meet with the Chairman of the Committee on Economy, Finance and Budget of the Parliament of Montenegro, the Minister of Finance and the High State Prosecutor, as well as representatives of the State Audit Institution. They will also visit the Development Bank of Montenegro.
They will then travel to Tirana, where they will meet with government officials and representatives, civil society representatives, and visit the site of an EU-funded project. A press conference at the Europe House in Tirana will be held on 18 September, at 14:00.
"Albania and Montenegro, as EU candidate countries, are already receiving EU funds. We want to find out how this spending is monitored and see for ourselves the impact of the money on the ground," said Head of Delegation Niclas Herbst ahead of the mission.
