Sarajevo, the most polluted city in the world - Authorities take measures to clean the air

Sarajevo authorities have issued an air quality warning and imposed bans on some cars and trucks, after the city was ranked the most polluted in the world for two consecutive evenings by Swiss air monitoring company IQAir.
The Sarajevo cantonal government reacted after air quality in the Bosnian capital reached dangerous levels, following days of fog and smog that blanketed the city of around 350,000 residents.
Authorities banned the movement of trucks over 3.5 tons and vehicles that do not meet European Union standards, and suspended construction work in open areas. Public gatherings in outdoor areas were also banned.
According to experts, the main sources of pollution are about 40,000 homes that use mainly wood and coal for heating during the winter, as well as road traffic. The city, located in a valley surrounded by mountains and hills, has long suffered from a phenomenon known as a temperature inversion, which keeps cold air and pollutants close to the ground. Mixed with fog, this pollution can linger for days.
Bosnia ranks among the countries with the highest levels of PM2.5 fine particulate matter pollution in Europe. According to the World Bank, about 50% of this pollution comes from burning solid fuels for heating, while about 20% comes from the transport sector. The Bank estimates that PM2.5 air pollution causes about 3,300 premature deaths each year and the loss of over 8% of Bosnia's Gross Domestic Product.
