Minimum wage increases in Serbia - Government confirms 10% increase from January

The Serbian government will increase the minimum monthly net wage by 10.1%, bringing it to 64,554 dinars (or about 551 euros) as of January 1, the Finance Ministry announced. The increase will follow another 9.4% increase, which takes effect on October 1 and brings the minimum wage to 500 euros.

During negotiations that began last month, employers demanded that the salary remain at the level of 500 euros, arguing that the costs on them were high, while unions wanted a minimum wage of 590 euros, due to rising food and energy prices.

The ministry announced that the government will partially meet employers' demands by increasing the non-taxable portion of wages by 20.4%. Around 90,000 people work on the minimum wage in the country.

Serbia usually increases minimum wages every January 1. This year, due to dissatisfaction with food prices as well as anti-government protests following the incident at the Novi Sad train station, the government imposed an extraordinary increase in October as well.

To ease the discontent, President Aleksandar Vučić last month introduced various measures to improve citizens' purchasing power, including limiting profit margins on the sale of food products and lowering interest rates on consumer loans.

In May, the minimum consumer basket in Serbia cost around 475 euros, according to data from the trade ministry. In July, annual consumer price inflation reached 4.9%, an increase from 4.6% the previous month.

The decision comes at a time when Serbia has around 2.37 million employed people, out of a population of around 6.59 million, according to the statistics office.
