Trade deficit in Montenegro increases - Exports cover only 12.6% of imports

Montenegro's total foreign trade for the period January-September 2025 amounted to 3.69 billion euros, according to preliminary data from the Statistical Administration MONSTAT. This represents an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

The value of goods exports reached 412.9 million euros, while imports reached 3.28 billion euros. Compared to the same period in 2024, exports contracted by 4.7 percent, while imports expanded by 7.6 percent.

Exports managed to cover only 12.6 percent of imports, a decrease from 14.2 percent last year, indicating a clear lack of balance in foreign trade.

Regarding the structure of shipments, the largest portion consisted of mineral fuels and lubricating oils, with a value of 105.7 million euros, of which electricity accounted for 75.3 million euros.

Imports are dominated by machinery and transport equipment, with a value of 797.8 million euros, among which the most important are road vehicles, worth 308.6 million euros.

The largest trading partners for exports were Serbia (109.2 million euros), Bosnia and Herzegovina (41.2 million euros) and Slovenia (30.9 million euros).

On the other hand, the leaders in imports were Serbia (566.9 million euros), China (411.4 million euros) and Germany (323.5 million euros).

The largest volume of trade exchanges was achieved with CEFTA member countries and the European Union, which confirms the country's sustainable orientation towards regional and European markets.
