Macedonia promotes green transport - Plans subsidies for 200 electric taxis in the country

North Macedonia has launched a project to subsidize the purchase of 200 electric taxis, as part of efforts to improve urban transport and reduce air pollution.
This is another important step towards the electrification of public transport, which was first announced last year by the government, when it announced the purchase of 100-120 electric buses.
The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, in collaboration with a taxi drivers' association, has presented a project to subsidize the first 200 electric vehicles for this category of workers. The goal is to create cleaner, quieter and more efficient urban transport for citizens across the country.
Skopje is one of the cities with the most polluted air in the world, so this initiative is seen as a necessity.
According to ministry sources, this project is a concrete step towards the transformation of urban transport. They presented an electric vehicle that meets high environmental standards, without polluting emissions or noise, and with high energy efficiency. Such cars will replace current diesel, gasoline or natural gas vehicles, bringing significant benefits to citizens, taxi drivers and the environment.
The average price of an electric car is around 28,000 euros, which for 200 units brings the total cost to around 5.6 million euros. The ministry's subsidy will be 15%, or around 840,000 euros.
Replacing taxis will reduce more than 2,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, an effect equivalent to planting over 120,000 trees. Noise pollution will also be significantly reduced, especially in residential areas.
