Greece strengthens energy ties with the region - Plans three new projects with

Greece aims to strengthen connections with neighboring countries' electricity systems, thanks to the Greek power transmission operator IPTO. This is part of a strategy to export excess energy from renewable sources, as well as meet the European Union's target of a minimum level of energy transfer of 15% for each member state by 2030.

The capacity for power transfer to and from Greece is mainly based on the 400 kV alternating current interconnection lines on the country's northern borders (with Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Turkey), as well as on the 400 kV underwater line connecting it to Italy. In addition to major international projects, such as Greece–Cyprus–Israel and Greece–Egypt, the IPTO has included three new important interconnection projects in the ten-year energy development plan 2025–2034.

These include the second connection to Turkey, the second connection to Albania and a new submarine cable to Italy. In parallel, in cooperation with the North Macedonian operator, the improvement of the existing line between the two countries is being considered.

The new interconnection with Turkey will be realized through a new line between the Nea Santa substation in Greece and the Babaeski substation in Turkey. The project will have a nominal capacity of 2,000 MVA and a length of approximately 130 km, 70 km in Greek territory and 60 km in Turkish territory, following a route parallel to the existing connection.

Meanwhile, the second connection to Albania will start from the Arachthos substation in Greece and end at the Fier power plant. It will have the same nominal capacity of 2,000 MVA and a total length of about 170 km, with 45 km passing through Greek territory and 125 km through Albanian territory.

Regarding the new interconnection with Italy, IPTO and the Italian operator Terna propose the construction of a new submarine cable with a capacity of 1,000 MW. However, this project has been met with skepticism by the Italian Energy Authority, which has expressed doubts about the benefits it would bring to Italy, assessing them as limited.
