Egg exports to Albania increase prices in Kosovo/ Product value in supermarkets exceeds post-war levels

The price of eggs in Kosovo has surpassed all previous high records. According to official data, never in the post-war years has the price been 6.39 euros for a set of 30 eggs. A major increase was observed in December 2022 and January 2023, but, nevertheless, it did not exceed 5 euros for a set of eggs. While these days, on the shelves of some markets and supermarkets, the consumer can find the price of the product more than 6 euros.
Meanwhile, in the stores of the most well-known poultry producer and trader "Konsoni", the price of eggs suddenly went from 4.50 euros per set to 5 euros, an increase of over 10 percent.
There is no official explanation for the recent extreme increase in the price of eggs, nor from the producers. The sellers justify themselves by stating that 'they do not determine the price, as they only market the product'. According to experts in the sector, Kosovo has sufficient poultry capacities to meet the needs of the country's inhabitants with eggs. On the other hand, there is no increase in the price of reproductive material, nor of corn or other products necessary for poultry feed.
Market observers have explained that many egg producers in Kosovo are exporting eggs to Albania, due to the high supply and favorable prices. They insist that this is one of the factors that has influenced the increase in the price of the product in Kosovo.
In general, the price increase has continued sharply this year, especially for food products, exceeding the average of recent years. According to data, until November of this year, the food group occupies the main place in expenses in Kosovar families.
