Visitors, fee to enter Britain - Nationals traveling without a visa must apply

If you're traveling to the UK, starting this week you'll need to apply online for a travel authorization before you leave.

Starting Wednesday, the United Kingdom will require US citizens, Canadians and nationals from more countries to have an electronic travel authorization, or ETA.

ETA is a pre-authorisation for travelers from countries where the UK does not require visas. Britain launched the program in 2024 for visitors from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. While now, it comes into force for many other countries.

The United States has similar requirements for citizens of European Union countries, Great Britain and other countries, who are not required to have a visa to enter. Later in 2025, EU countries will require US citizens and those from other countries to meet such criteria.

Citizens do not need an ETA if they have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK.

The application is made online using the UK ETA app for Android and iPhone and costs £10. The authorization is valid for two years and for visits up to six months. The fee is paid by credit card.

Travelers will need to upload photos of their passport and theirs to apply. They will also need authorization even if they are traveling to another country but with a stopover at a UK airport.
