New tunnel connects Austria with Italy - Underground road expected to be

Deep in the Austrian Alps, one of Europe's most important infrastructure projects is advancing, the Brenner Base Tunnel. Once completed, the 55-kilometer-long railway will connect the city of Innsbruck in Austria with Fortezza in northern Italy.

Currently, trains have to travel along a steep, winding line built more than 150 years ago that crosses the Alps. This route is not suitable for long, heavy freight trains, said Julia Gruber, head of communications at the company operating the works (BBT SE).

According to her, the road will not only connect the economic centers of Munich and Verona, but, being at the heart of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor, will serve as a key link between northern and southern Europe. She described the Brenner Pass as “one of the most problematic traffic points in Europe.”

The structure consists of a complex system that includes two main tunnels, an exploration tunnel, connecting corridors and emergency points. The exploration tunnel, which passes 12 meters below the main facilities, has a smaller diameter and serves for drainage and geological studies.

At its deepest point, the facility will lie 1,700 meters below the surface. Currently, at a depth of 1,000 meters, the temperature remains constant at 22–23 degrees Celsius, according to data.

The structure is expected to be completed in 2032. If the 12.7-kilometer Inntal connecting passage is included, it will become the longest rail tunnel in the world.
