EU's electric transformation - Which countries are buying the most electric

Battery electric vehicles accounted for 16.4% of new car registrations in the EU in the first ten months of 2025, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). This represents an increase compared to 13.2% during the same period in 2024.

A total of 1,473,447 new electric cars were registered in the 27 EU countries between January and October, over 301,000 more than a year earlier. Germany was the biggest contributor, with over 434,600 registrations added and one of the highest growth rates in the bloc, 39.4% more than last year.

Of the four largest EU economies, Spain saw the fastest expansion, with electric car registrations rising by 89.7% to 81,100. Italy showed a 26.5% increase, while France improved by a more moderate 5.3% over the same period.

In percentage terms, Poland showed the biggest expansion in the bloc. New registrations rose by 124.6% compared to a year earlier. However, the 30,641 new cars represented only 6.4% of the entire new vehicle market.

Several countries with low market shares saw remarkable growth in electric car sales, including Slovenia (+99.3%), Slovakia (+77.5%), Lithuania (+62.7%) and Bulgaria (+58.1%). Registrations shrank in several countries, such as Croatia, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania and Estonia.

Hybrid cars remain the most popular choice among buyers in the EU, accounting for 34.6% of the market. Petrol and diesel models together accounted for 36.6%, down from 46.3% a year earlier.
